Local business owners are giving back to their hometown community in a big way. Piros Signs Inc., headquartered in Barnhart, MO, has announced the donation and installation of a fully refurbished, high-tech scoreboard valued between $500,000 and $600,000 to the Northwest R-I School District.
The display carries a rich regional sports history. It was previously installed at both Jefferson City High School and Windsor High School. After surviving severe storms that damaged the scoreboard at both locations, Piros Signs acquired the equipment and completely restored it to original factory specifications. Now fully operational and performing at peak capacity, the state-of-the-art sign has found its permanent home at Northwest.
The sign is a Daktronics HD display measuring 18 by 32 feet. The sound system is a Daktronics SportsSound 1500, capable of serving stadiums of up to 8,000 fans with a maximum rating of 137 dB. It will supplement the existing audio from the press box at Lions Stadium.
For the owners of Piros Signs, the decision to donate the scoreboard was deeply personal. Having grown up in the Northwest community and raising their families here, they saw an opportunity to support Northwest, its students, and fellow community members who mean so much to them.
“The damaged equipment was sitting in our yard and we kept thinking we could repair the damage and put these up at the high school,” said Piros Signs Vice President David Brand Jr. “Because Piros Signs specializes in video display installations across the country for schools, universities, and professional stadiums, we were in a unique position to repair and donate both the equipment and installation. We believe it will greatly improve the gameday experience while creating new sponsorship opportunities to help fund future improvements.”
Northwest Athletic Director Kyle Wampler expressed deep gratitude for the impact the donation will bring.
“This scoreboard is going to make a tremendous impact on the gameday experience at Northwest,” he said. “It gives our student-athletes, coaches, and fans a first-class addition to our athletic facilities and creates another way to showcase the excitement and accomplishments of our students. We are extremely grateful for this generous donation and the investment it represents in Northwest and our community. Gifts like this have an impact that will be felt by our students and families for many years to come.”
“We install displays like this at schools across the country, so our competitive side definitely comes out when we see what other communities have been able to do,” said Brand. “We knew we had the experience and resources to make something like this happen for our own school, and we’re extremely proud to give back to the community where we were born and raised.”
“This new scoreboard is more than just an upgrade for our stadium, it's a testament to the incredible support of our community,” said Northwest High School Principal Dr. Stella Viehland. “We thank Piros Signs and the Brand brothers, both of whom are Northwest alumni. We are truly proud of their hard work, success, and generosity. Once a Lion, always a Lion.”
Crews completed the installation and testing ahead of schedule. The scoreboard officially lit up for the first time at Northwest for the September 25, 2026, varsity football game - a full two weeks before the original target date of the October 9, 2026, homecoming football game.
